Cashing in on Guitar Hero? Battle of the Bands for Wii
In an unsurprising move, THQ Inc. has released screenshots and videos for a guitar hero-esque rhythm game called Battle of the Bands. Forgive me for being skeptical about this game, but third-party titles on Wii have often been nothing more than poor attempts at cashing in on the Wii’s novelty.
This one, at first glance, seems to be exploiting both the Wii and the Rock Band/Guitar Hero crazes simultaneously. Sure, there are differences: the “notes” go up, and instead of “strumming” you just move the remote in the right direction. I hate to say it, but that sounds like the accursed “waggle” controls.
What THQ hopes will prevent this game from becoming a simple clone is the battle system. During the course of a song, each band takes turns using one of three weapons at their disposal to attack the other band. It sounds like an interesting and potentially enjoyable dynamic, but so did Guitar Hero III’s “Battle Mode,” and I could not stand that.
Here’s to proving me wrong.
