DLC for Wii? I think Satan just felt a nip in the air
What’s become commonplace for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 owners is finally becoming a reality for Wii owners as well. Downloadable content via Nintendo’s just-launched (in Japan) WiiWare service just debuted as part of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King.
Besides getting the crown as the most long-winded game title of 2008 so far, the Square-Enix RPG is also the first to allow gamers to add to their experience by purchasing additional playable races and character costumes through an in-game store system. The store uses the familiar Wii Points system that owners already use to buy virtual console titles.
WiiWare is scheduled to drop on U.S. shores May 12, but here’s the rub: Where is this content supposed to go exactly? Unlike Xbox 360 and PS3, the Wii has no hard drive and the one form of expansion it does have (an SD card slot) can’t hold anything that is currently in use, only archives of games you’re not playing anymore.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for DLC. Games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band have shown how awesome it can be, but Nintendo needs to get their act together and allow gamers and developers alike to really take advantage of it.
