EA making an online Monopoly game…

EA is developing a new Monopoly game for the PC, Wii, PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360. It will feature both on and offline play with up to four players.

“EA is taking MONOPOLY’S core gameplay and bringing it to life in a way never before imagined,” said Chip Lange, Vice President and General Manager of EA’s Casual label. “With this dynamic take on Hasbro’s classic board game, we’ve accelerated the pace of play, added new interactive mini-game sequences and integrated multi-player moments designed to make MONOPOLY a non-stop party for the whole family.”

I think this game will do badly. I don’t think too many people are going to buy this game and it will be hard to get an online game going, which is where I believe you would have the most fun. Who wants to play Monopoly against bots? That would be boring as hell.

As far as playing online goes, I have no idea how this would work as Monopoly takes some time to finish, which is not the best attribute for an online game.

I think that they should just make this for Xbox Live Arcade as lots of people would buy it and the arcade really needs some more board games. I’ve read of people wanting this to happen, so why they don’t do it is a mystery to me.

Why would the game sell more on XBLA? In fact i think it would sell worse because the avaibility of the deeper (albeit different) board games like Catan and Carcassonne will draw people away. The casual game audience is way larger on PC, on Xbox its only 10 million (assuming all 10 million xbox fans are interested in that, where its probably more around 6). PC games have a HUGE audience, just look at Pop Cap games, Bejeweled has sold over 12 million copies.

This probably wont be a huge hit, but if it is moderately priced it will probably sell a million copies. Espically if they implement features like the ability to save in-progress MP games (like Galactic Civilizations ).

to Vincent:

I don’t think he meant it would sell more on live than the PC, he meant it would do better as a Live title then as a boxed game for the 360 and I completely agree with him. Monopoly is one of those games that everyone knows and for 800pts on live, everyone will buy it just ’cause they can. “Oh, I like monopoly, lets try that?” But to actually go buy the disc? Maybe if I’m walking past it and it falls into my cart. Its just not the kind of game that I’m going to put into my disc drive. The other thing thats nice about Live is that if someone has it then they must have a connection and be able to play it. Every sale is a potential online player. Very important for an online game. Finally, games like Catan and Carcassonne have done really well on XBOX LIVE and as you said, they are deeper. They are also obscure and almost nobody has heard of them. You take that same type of game and business model, but this time its Monopoly, a game EVERYBODY has played and it will sell like crazy.

Yes I did mean that.

Ah, i didnt understand that the game was going to be a boxed copy. If this is the case then i completely agree with you ScOtTy, as a retail game, which i assume will sell for $40, it will be a massive flop

$40 rehash of the same old stuff for a $10 board game is pretty sad.

(ps, Love the Infogrames cover for the EA story)
