Earthworm Jim is BACK!
OMFGBBQ! Okay, I need to collect myself here. Ahem. Good morning everyone, and thank you for coming. I’ll make this announcement as brief as possible, as I’m sure we all have various things we need to get done.
Interplay has teamed with Doug TenNapel and announced that Earthworm Jim is making a comeback! No specific details surrounding the game have been announced regarding when or what system, so all we have is a “we’re making a game!” press release, which is good enough for me. Since I’m excited enough that I just peed a little (damn, I liked that chair…), I’ll post the imaginary conversation I just had in my head with Interplay…
“Hey there Interplay. C’mere buddy, take a knee and please listen for a moment. Look, this game really needs to be 2D. No, no… this is NOT a point open for argument. The original EWJ made the Sega Genesis and the Super Nintendo do some really amazing stuff in the realm of 2D animation (even more in the case of the Genesis), and I have to wonder what a version of it on more powerful hardware would look like. You tried to take the franchise 3D before, remember? I know, I know, there wasn’t much more to do with the Nintendo 64, but you could’ve still made a 2D game for the PlayStation, rather than let the franchise just die off like that! Yeah, I know you and Shiny parted ways by then, but that’s more of an excuse than a reason, isn’t it?
Hey Interplay, I do appreciate that you’re trying to get back in the game. It’s great that all the franchises I loved so much are going to be revived, and hopefully, improved upon for the new consoles out there. To tell you the truth, I still fire up Earthworm Jim or a little MDK once in a while, just to relive those happy memories. I’m glad you’re back. Now let’s go hire a crack team of 2D animators!”
Somehow I pictured us in a deserted baseball field after the big game, with piano music behind us. That’s not weird is it? WAIT! Don’t answer that! Instead, watch these video’s of Earthworm Jim 2 and The Neverhood. If you’ve never heard of them before… well… then I’m surprised you read this whole article. Get familiar with the work of Doug TenNapel via the YouTubes after the jump!
