Fallout 3 is looking S.P.E.C.I.A.L.
Among the many classic game series making a comeback this year is Fallout, an RPG set in a post-apocalyptic America. The first two games were developed by Interplay and released in the 1990s for PC. Now, Bethesda Softworks, the same developers that created Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, are working on part three, which looks to be very different from its predecessors.
Shacknews has published an excellent and very detailed preview of the game that describes how the developers have struggled with updating the game for today’s consoles while keeping the core of the Fallout experience intact. Here’s an excerpt:
…none of the characters or locales from the original two games will make an appearance. Those games’ storylines were set on the West Coast, while Fallout 3 has famously been moved to Washington, DC. Not only does that give the writers a chance to start over with a fresh storyline grounded in Fallout’s familiar milieu, but it also lets them address questions that never came up in the original games. For instance, what’s been going on in the nation’s seat of power since the first bombs dropped? What happened to the governmental infrastructure? Is there even anyone left to govern?”
I’m looking forward to discovering the answers to these questions when the game ships for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC this fall.
