First look: Gears of War 2 gameplay

Two years after the original “Emergence Day” will see the return of Marcus Phoenix and the COG team in Gears of War 2, slated for release in November. Epic’s console baby has grown into one of Xbox 360’s most important franchises and after its official announcement in February we now have the first peek at the game’s campaign and Epic’s updated Unreal Engine 3 in action.

After Cliffy B sets the scene for the level, the gameplay starts, looking very close to the original. The textures have definitely been refined. The color palette is better than the overwhelming grays and browns of GoW, though there’s still plenty of that. Hopefully there are lots of these daytime settings in the final game, compared to the long slogs of underground cave battling in the first game. The new shielding ability is welcome, and chainsaw dueling looks to be very satisfying. All in all, very cinematic and a good indicator of the blockbuster to come.

Using enemies as shields…
Melee combat…

I just got happy… in my pants. :-)
