Give the Elf some food, already! Gauntlet coming to DS

Posted by Dave Mussman

Gauntlet DSI was a freshman in college when the classic 4-player action title Gauntlet hit the local arcades. In the months and years that followed, a lot of the money that I was supposed to be spending on things like books and oh, you know, food and stuff, was plunked down instead into that evil machine.

There really hasn’t been another title before or since that could suck down quarters faster and yet still keep you interested in battling through another monster infested level.

Eidos Interactive apparently understands the appeal and looks to bring the mayhem to Nintendo DS in June. According to a first look published on IGN, the game will feature all the classic gameplay with multi-player co-op support either locally or through the Nintendo WiFi Connection service. Several new multiplayer modes such as Deathmatch and Treasure Horde will also be included.

Perhaps the most interesting feature is support for voice over IP via the DS’s built-in microphone. I know I want to give my friends grief when I hear the announcer say “Valkarie shot the potion!” or “The Elf needs food badly!”

Best of all, though, it’s only $30. That’s just 120 quarters!
