GTA IV lines forming… many parents’ basements empty

In what seems to be a staple of any product that has been hyped to obscene levels, excited gamers are already camping out in line to be the first to get their hands on Rockstar Games’ newest installment in the Grand Theft Auto series. Wow. Is this what our geek society is becoming? Every other month you catch wind of people camping in line to be the first to purchase something. The game is still a few weeks out, but these gamers are waiting in line for a title that will be widely available on release, unlike the previously choked quantities of the systems it’s made for. I just don’t get it… the whole waiting in line for weeks on end to purchase something. It’s a sad state of our worship of consumer goods I suppose. I guess I do admire their unadulterated fanboyism, and unlike Star Wars Episode 1 was for me, I hope they aren’t destroyed if they don’t get the religious experience they were hoping for. I still want my $8 back, Mr. Lucas…

The hype machine is in full effect for the latest target in wacky Jack Thompson’s sad life, and sales are already expected to hit the stratosphere. But to give my 2 cents, as I always feel the need to, I won’t be waiting in line for GTA IV.

As I type this, there is currently an advertisement for Grand Theft Auto IV sitting on the front page of Gaming Clarity. But to tell you the truth, I have yet to actually purchase a copy of any Grand Theft Auto game since the second one for my PC. Don’t get me wrong though, I have no ill will against this game or the people who enjoy them! I’ve played all of them. I gave them every chance to prove to me why they are as popular as they are. Just not my taste of game. But then again, I’ve always preferred Spy Hunter (sorry Edie, I couldn’t help myself… hugs not drugs).

I can see camping for hardware if shortages are expected, but software?… ridiculous.
