GTA IV Standard Edition sold out?

Many UK retailers such as GAME, Gamestation and Play.com are reporting that they will not be able to keep up with demand for the standard version of Grand Theft Auto IV, but could this just be a scam to get more pre-orders for the Collector’s Edition?

GAMES website reports: “We cannot guarantee delivery on the day of release for orders placed on or after the 7th of April.”

Gamestation’s site reports: “Due to unprecedented demand for the standard editions of Grand Theft Auto IV, we are no longer taking pre-orders for this version.”

Play.com report: “far and away the biggest selling title” he’d ever seen on the Playstation 3 – but predicted the site would have more stock back in for the game’s release date of Tuesday, April 29th.

I searched around and found a few forum posts of people claiming they have spoken to staff in these stores, and being told that the standard package will be in stock on release day. According to them, you will be able to walk into a store on the release date, and rather easily just pick the game up. I have also asked about this at my local GAME store to confirm this, and got the same response.

So could this report just be a scam to get more pre-orders of the standard edition of the game?

My personal feeling is that it is safer to pre-order, and know you’ll get the version you paid for, than to take the risk and not have any game at all!

I can tell you for sure I certainly wont have any available for someone who walks in on April 29th in my store. Every copy I could get my hands on is allocated, and even a chunk of my follow up delivery are half paid for too.
I’ve even had numerous customers buying 360s in preparation for this game.

I got an email from Game stating that because of high demand they have started packing up there stock and because of this i might get charged for the game from today! lets hope there is a monkey working for them that sticks mine in the post today! that would be a wood giving event!
