Killing with just a Touch?
I can see a lot of game types being sure-fire hits on Apple’s forthcoming “Touch OS” platform. Super Monkey Ball, for one, demoed at the iPhone SDK announcement event, seems like a perfect fit. Spore also seems promising, but might be more like a companion to the PC or console versions.
But first-person shooters? That I don’t see. Nevertheless, some enterprising coder over at HermitWorks has successfully ported id Software’s Quake 3 to the iPod Touch. It utilizes the bulit-in accelerometer for movement, while tapping on the touch screen fires your weapon. They captured a short video of the world’s first touch death match as well.
Personally, I don’t get it. I love a good FPS as much as the next guy, but on the iPhone? Mmm… I don’t think so.

While it’s cool, I don’t think tilt controls are such a good idea for an FPS. I can easily see myself having to tilt the thing back and forth because I keep overtilting by a fraction of an inch.
The guy in the video managed to hit.. himself.. but he was using rockets afterall. He had a few problems simply waking through corridors properly.
I’d have to try it out for myself though.

Its Quake 3 not Doom 3 dave
But i dont understand why people are making such a big deal about this, i mean the requirements for this game is a 270mhz processor and 8mb or VRAM, so its not very taxing. I dont know the specs on the iphone but im not surprised that the game can work on the iphone seeing as Quake 2 is playable on the Nintendo DS, and that has a measly 100mhz processor .
The controls are interesting though, allowing movement through tilting is quite cool, id would be interesting to see that implemented into a actual handheld game system where you could then use the face buttons for shooting and such.
