Medic weapons and achievements for Team Fortress 2 revealed… and impossible

Yesterday Valve Software revealed to ShackNews the 3 new weapons that will be released for the Medic class for their game Team Fortress 2, and accompanying achievements required to unlock them. These new weapons are just the first in a series of downloadable content that will be released for the popular class-based shooter, and each download will add new weapons for the other classes and achievements tailored to those classes. And while this brings more variety to the game it also brings some unbalance.

First off, Valve is releasing the weapon packs one at a time, which is a problem. I feel that doing this will cause a large influx of people to start playing that class to sample out the new weapons. And you can’t just play with these new weapons, you have to first unlock 12 of the 36 achievements to earn each new weapon; and since so many people are playing with that class, getting the achievements will take longer, in turn causing the mass amount of people to continue using this class. See the problem here?

The second concern is that not everyone has time to get the achievements, and it dosen’t really seem fair to punish these players because of this. But Valve is apparently addressing this by allowing another way to unlock the weapons, but they have not yet announced what this method will be.

Now, onto the actual achievements. Only the Medic achievements have been revealed, and they are quite tough. Of course there are some easy ones, like healing an engineer while he’s repairing a building, but there are also ones that seem to be almost impossible. For instance, the achievement titled ‘Chief of Staff’ requires you to heal 10 million total health points… 10 million! Healing a Heavy who has 1 health will get you 299 healing points, so you will have to heal 30,000 Heavys to full health to get this achievement. And these aren’t like standard Xbox achievements, which are really only for show. To use the new weapons you must earn them.

Each new weapon will require 12 achievements to unlock. The first new weapon you receive at 12 achievements is the “Blutsaugher”, a replacement for the syringe gun that sucks health from your enemy and restores it to you. The second new weapon after you have earned 24 of the new achievements is the “Critzcreig”, a replacement for the Medi Gun that gives your target 10 seconds of critical hits instead. The last weapon, the “Ubersaw” is a replacement for the bone saw that charges your Ubercharge 25% per hit, but it lacks the ability to do a critical hit. You will have to unlock every last one of the achievements to use this weapon in the game. These new additions to Team Fortress 2 will definitely rekindle my interest, and hopefully will allow for more strategies and map designs to be used in the game… if you can earn the achievements to use them.
