Sega comes clean: Official on Sonic Unleashed
Following two weeks of rumors and buzz about a “secret” new Sonic game, Sega has officially launched the new site along with additional details and a video.
To no-one’s surprise the title is called Sonic Unleashed and will feature a “re-defined experience for fans and newcomers of the franchise alike by combining picturesque and detailed scenery, an expansive world with multiple paths to choose from and dynamic viewpoints for an immersive and renewed gaming atmosphere,” according to the press release.
Whew, that’s a whole lot of marketing-speak nonsense in my opinion. So, what does it all mean?
From the look of the video, at least, it seems the developers have learned from the mistakes of past 3-D Sonic efforts. The sense of speed is definitely there and gameplay seems to vary between straight ahead on-rails sections and other areas where Sonic can wander around more freely. The graphics look solid, if a little cartoony and there was no mention which system build of the game the video was taken from.
As for the plot, Sega describes it like this: “Having been broken apart by the evil Dr. Eggman, it’s up to Sonic to put the pieces of the world back together again by retrieving the power of the chaos emeralds! In doing so, Sonic will find himself in a race against time and faced with an unusual situation that will challenge him in ways never before seen. Both day and night play different, yet important, roles in Sonic’s newest quest… as the sun sets, a new adventure awakens. By completing a wide variety of action-packed stages, spanning the seven broken continents of the world, gamers will need to unleash Sonic’s amazing abilities to save the world, and himself!”
Yes, well, I just hope they make the game fun this time so I can get to the point of actually saving the world.
