Sega Racing Studios closed

Sega has confirmed that their racing division, Sega Racing Studios, has now been closed after only three years. A statement from Sega Europe read in part, “…unfortunately the Sega Racing Studio’s 5 year plan would not result in a successful return for the Sega business moving forward.” This probably has a lot to do with Sega’s overall economic troubles as well.
Now, I don’t know what impacted the studio more: Only releasing one game despite having 60 employees; or that the game they did choose to release was a remake of their old arcade series, Sega Rally Revo, which despite amazing graphics and new features like track deforming sold fewer than 300,000 units. It wasn’t like Sega was lacking in franchises. They also had Outrun, Scud Racing, Daytona USA and Sega GT that they could have updated, but they picked the most arcade-like of the bunch, which was a big mistake because that genre has been dominated by EA’s Need For Speed series for the last decade.
But maybe this is a good thing for Sega, moving away from in-house developing to publishing other developers’ games. That’s where there biggest successes have been this generation with Condemned, Full Auto and The Club.
