Trifarce: How The Legend of Zelda trailer made me cry…
This April 1st the Internet was abuzz with dozens of exciting new “announcements” (read: shameless pranks) from their companies of choice. From Xbox Live the Board Game™ , to Starcraft 2’s Tauren marine units, all were enjoyable, if not a little transparent. However, the video that had the biggest impact on me was IGN’s “exclusive release” of The Legend of Zelda movie trailer. (This is not to be confused with the long forgotten fan film.)
The trailer itself is entertaining, which is quite unusual for the typically inflammatory high jinks associated with April Fools. Showcased in the trailer is a more-manly-than-usual Link with an awfully hairy Ganondorf. The casting is passable, but not convincing given the lack of popular actors. That being said, the acting is good and the CG was used cleverly to create pretty realistic monsters, including everyone’s favorite armored arachnid, Gohma.
Most importantly, the combat scenes, though brief, looked authentic with strict two-handed sword combat between Link and Ganondorf, and a more mysterious character, named Saharsla, fighting random foes. The quality and effort put into this prank is staggering. Amidst all the bullshots and farces, the folks at IGN decided to step the game up a couple hundred notches.
While I suppose doing something like this is all in good fun, I consider the production of a very elaborate trailer such as this a slight affront to fans of the series. I was seriously disappointed because I came to the sad realization that there is no chance in hell that a decent Zelda movie will ever be made. Regardless of whether you fell for the farce, the mere creation of such a trailer is an unfair tease to fans open to the idea of a Zelda movie. Love it or hate it, IGN has come out on top in the gaming hoax hullabaloo.
Note, however, my award for overall favorite prank had to be YouTube’s massive Rick-rolling attack.

A good Zelda movie could be made. BUT it would have to be Pre-Rendered.
